Help for QuickTime

by WiL Admin last modified 11 April 2006, 05.10PM

If you're connecting to WiL through the Department of Education and Training's network, you will require QuickTime to be setup with the correct settings for it to work. These settings are outlined below. For those connecting from home, follow the same procedure as outlined below, but check for specific notes pertaining to home connections if you're experiencing problems.

If you don't have QuickTime installed yet, you can download from the Apple web site (http://www.apple.com/quicktime/download/).

Open QuickTime Control Panel

Go to the 'Start' button and open up your 'Control Panels'. Once this opens, double-click on the 'QuickTime' icon to open the 'QuickTime' control panel.

Navigate to 'Connection Speed'

Next you'll need to check that the 'Connection Speed' is set appropriately for your Internet connection. Use the drop-down menu at the top of the control panel and select 'Connection Speed'.

Select Appropriate Speed

On the 'Connection Speed' pane, use the drop-down menu to select an appropriate speed for your Internet connection. If connecting from home via modem, select 56Kbps, if from DET then select 384Kbps, otherwise select based on your bandwidth you're connecting through. If you're not sure speak to your system/network administrator.

Navigate to 'Streaming Proxy'

Next you'll need to check that the 'Streaming Proxy' settings are correctly set for your network. Use the drop-down menu at the top of the control panel and select 'Streaming Proxy'.

Modify 'Streaming Proxy' Settings

Sometimes using proxy servers with QuickTime will not allow the stream to come down to you. If this is the case, you'll first need to make sure the the 'Use System Settings' checkbox at the bottom of the pane is unchecked (as shown). This will then allow you to uncheck the use of 'SOCKS Server' and 'HTTP Proxy Server'. You can just leave the other settings in there if you like. For those connecting from DET, use the settings as seen in the image to the left. For those connecting from Home, try leaving all of these blank as it's not likely that you'll have a Proxy server setup.

Navigate to 'Streaming Transport'

Next you'll need to check that the 'Streaming Transport' is set correctly for your firewall. Use the drop-down menu at the top of the control panel and select 'Streaming Transport'.

Change to 'Streaming Transport' Settings

To allow an easier route for QuickTime video streams to come down, we've enabled them to come through on the same path as a normal web page. First of all, if currently set to 'auto', change this to 'Use this protocol and port ID:' and then check the 'Use HTTP, Port ID 80' as shown in the example to the left. These settings are recommended for home use as well as for DET use.

This should now allow you to view the video streams. If you're still having problems, please check with your Network/System Administrator that you have access to QuickTime.

Thanks
